The Birth, Adoption, and Death of Dorothy Dutchess is a dysfunctional American farce that takes us on one loving father's outrageous adventures alongside his cheating, dog-slaying wife; a thin, scimitar-toting lesbian; a young, beer-can- throwing slacker; his drug addicted and pregnant young mate; and the sin-drenched minister who brings them all together. Presented as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. Composer's note: This is the first theatre "gig" I had upon arriving in NYC, and also represented my first non-musical collaboration with playwright, Brian Silliman. My contribution consisted mainly of scene change music and minor incidental cues. However, the play also featured a big, full-cast musical number at the end of the show – for which I set Brian's lyrics to music (verbatim, I think). I seem to recall that the run of the show was plagued by technical difficulties – i.e. sets falling down, and city-wide power outages. But all in all, this show was (and still IS) really fun, and deserves another production one of these days! |
